Hormone Disruptors in Women’s Activewear: What You Need to Know

Writer: Angela MarshallAngela Marshall

Did you know that your activewear could be impacting your hormones?

Activewear is designed to keep you comfortable, dry, and flexible during workouts, but did you know some fabrics might be affecting your health? Many synthetic materials used in sportswear contain hormone-disrupting chemicals that could interfere with your body’s natural balance. These chemicals can be absorbed through your skin, especially when you’re sweating, potentially contributing to hormonal imbalances, fertility struggles, and other health concerns.

Common hormone-disrupting chemicals in activewear

Some of the most concerning hormone disruptors found in activewear include:

1. Phthalates

Phthalates are commonly used in synthetic fabrics to increase flexibility and durability. However, they can interfere with the endocrine system, potentially affecting reproductive health and increasing the risk of hormone-related disorders.

2. BPA & BPS

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its substitute, Bisphenol S (BPS), are often found in plastic-based textiles. These chemicals mimic oestrogen in the body and have been linked to fertility issues, metabolic disorders, and immune system imbalances.

3. PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

PFAS are used to make fabrics water-resistant and stain-proof. Unfortunately, they are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or the body. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to thyroid dysfunction, immune suppression, and even certain cancers.

Why does this matter for women’s health?

For women navigating hormonal imbalances, fertility challenges, perimenopause, or menopause, exposure to these toxins can add unnecessary stress to the body. The endocrine system is incredibly sensitive, and prolonged exposure to hormone disruptors may lead to:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Reduced fertility

  • Increased symptoms of menopause

  • Thyroid and immune system issues

At Womb to World, we prioritise your well-being, which is why our practitioners often wear natural fabrics like cotton and linen which are free from harmful chemicals and gentle on the skin.

How to protect yourself from toxins in activewear

Making small, informed choices can help reduce your exposure to these hormone disruptors. Here’s how:

Choose Organic, Non-Toxic Clothing: Look for activewear brands that use organic cotton, bamboo, or natural fibres without chemical treatments. These materials are naturally breathable and hypoallergenic, reducing irritation and minimising toxin absorption.

Wash New Clothes Before Wearing: This helps remove any residual chemicals from the manufacturing process. Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent to avoid additional exposure to synthetic chemicals and consider adding a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to help break down toxins.

Opt for Natural Fabrics: Cotton, linen, and wool are excellent alternatives to synthetic materials. These fabrics allow for better air circulation, reducing the risk of skin irritation and preventing the absorption of harmful chemicals.

Avoid Plastics in Activewear: Be mindful of clothing containing plastics like polyester and spandex, which may contain BPA and phthalates. Instead, choose brands that prioritise sustainability and toxin-free materials.

Look for Certifications: Seek out clothing with certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OEKO-TEX, or Bluesign. These certifications ensure that the fabrics meet rigorous safety standards and are free from harmful chemicals.

Air Out Your Clothes: Before wearing new clothes, let them air out for a few days in a well-ventilated space. This can help dissipate some of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may be present in the fabric.

Read Labels Carefully: Avoid products that list chemical treatments like stain resistance, anti-odour technology, or wrinkle-free coatings, as these may contain PFAS and other endocrine disruptors.
